About Hosting an Academic Year Student
Provide a safe and supportive environment for learning
The main goal for the host family is to create a supportive, caring family environment for the international student to live in. We ask that families treat students as their own, including them in family activities, encouraging additional school activities, hobbies and supporting their educational choices.
In order to successfully host an Academic Year student, your family home will be their new home for the time they are in the US.
We ask that families are able to do the following:
- Provide a private bedroom with bed, study area and appropriate storage for students personal items
- Provide three meals a day (not including purchased school lunch)
- Introduce the student to American culture
- Support the student’s academic and social endeavors
- Attend parent/teacher conferences when needed
- Maintain open communication with Xplore Local Coordinator
- Attend a Host Family Orientation
The best part about hosting is the lasting cultural influence for your family, as host families often enjoy a life-long bond with their students and often even visit their students abroad.
It is our experience that hosting an international student brings an element of learning, understanding and awareness into our host families homes that can only be achieved by sharing new experiences together. The effects of this experience are profound and have the potential to change our world.
Some families, and especially teenage peers find that learning about their student’s life, culture, language, and drive inspires them to want to achieve more and perhaps even travel abroad to study as well.
Hosting can become your window to the world...
We began hosting 15 years ago and now have adult children all over the world who warm our hearts with photos of their families and visits. It is profound the positive impact on our family and truly the best gift we gave our children.
Frequently Asked Questions
We are with you every step of the way – no matter whether you have never hosted before or have previous experience of hosting – our priority is ensuring your experience hosting is rewarding for your family!
Before meeting your student, we provide a copy of the student’s application. We encourage our students to correspond with our families before arriving to break the ice and get to know each other. In addition, before your student arrives in the US, we offer a thorough and informative orientation for families as well as a range of excellent resources to prepare for student arrival.
On-going support comes from a Local Coordinator who lives in your community. He or she will be on hand to discuss any questions you have and will be in touch to conduct regularly with you, the student and their school to ensure the experience is successful and rewarding for all.
